Brass Channel Tutorial
This area is shop work in prioress.. Always wear safety glasses for eye protection & leather gloves when handling glass. Obey all safety precautions listed on product containers, and please take your time and enjoy this experience.
This page is a brief tutorial that will focus on the construction of a "Brass Channeled" panel. It is not intended to be the end all of teaching aids, but is offered to shed light on the steps that are involved to produce a panel. Beginner's interested in the art of stained glass will get an understanding of the tools and steps required to make panels
Brass Channel Part 1 of 2

Step-1 Set Up:

  • Work Table
  • Pencil&Erasure
  • Paper Carbon
  • Paper
  • Square
  • Ruler of Tape
  • Measure

Start out with two sheets of drawing paper. Place one sheet of carbon paper (same width & height) between the two drawing paper sheets, and carbon side face down. (see photo below)

Notes: I like to use one large sheet of drawing paper and fold it in half. Secure the three sheets of paper (drawing page carbon - face down - drawing paper) to the work surface with small pieces of tape. Place a straight edge or rule on the lower side and align it with the drawing paper.

Step-2 Pattern Prep:

Tools: Foil Scissors & Regular Scissors

After the paper and carbon sheets are laid out and ready to go, you can proceed to start on the design. See photo. If you are tracing an existing pattern, try sliding it face up just below the top sheet of drawing paper. Depending on the type of drawing paper used, you can usually see through the top sheet to trace the design.

Step-3 Piece Numbering:

Shown below we see the pattern and the cartoon. Both are identical with one difference, the pattern drawing will be cut into the individual sections of glass. While the cartoon will serve as a map to arrange the glass components

Step-4 Cutting The Pattern:

Tools: Glass Cutter + Oil & Glass Pliers

Use a special pair of glass pattern scissors (Lead Pattern Shears) to cut out the individual pieces of paper. The function of the pattern shears is to remove a thin area between the two segments of paper. This area is equal to the heart of the brass channel. The Lead Glass Pattern Shears are very similar to sewing pattern shears in that they accomplish the same results.

Step-5 Separating Paper

Tools: Plastic Tubs

When all the paper is cut, I like to separate it into tubs. This keeps the glass organized throughout the whole process.

Step-6 Spraying The Pattern

  • Ordinary Cardboard
  • Spray Adhesive
  • Adequate Ventilation
  • Rags or Paper Towels
  • Windex or Glass Cleaner
The paper pattern is placed on a prepared surface (lightly sprayed) first. An even coating is sprayed onto the surface of the paper
Notes: This panel will utilize a textured glass. Care should be observed when deciding which side or surface of glass will face outward. On this pectoral project we will spray the paper with the numbered side up. The numbered side will stick face down onto the smooth side of the glass, we will cut the glass from this side. When the panel is assembled the textured side will face upward to the viewing or finished side.

Step-7 Cutting The Glass

Tools:

  • Glass Cutter
  • Oil
  • Breaker Pliers
  • Safety Glasses
  • Band-Aids
  • Work Gloves

Start at the edge of the glass and make a nick, then with a nice even pressure on the wheel, run the cutter over the surface of the glass. Always cut from the smoothest side of the glass. The pattern can act as a guide for the wheel to score it’s cut. The sound should be similar to a clean quiet zipper. Then with your glass Pliers break the glass as shown in the photo. Remember there’s no better way to learn how to cut glass then to practice on scraps.

Break the glass at the scored line. If you have strong tough hands, you can try breaking the glass like by hand. Another way would be to place the glass on the edge of a table with the score right along the edge. Firmly rest your hand on top of the half on the table, grasp the other half and snap downward in one clean motion. (See figure 7c) Wearing protective gloves try a few practice cuts prior to your final cutting

Note: As always please wear safety glasses.
